The world of electric vehicles is about to take a new turn! Yamaha is soon going to launch its new electric scooter in the Indian market, which will be based on the River Indie platform. This new EV is codenamed RY01 and it can be launched by the end of 2025. This scooter will compete with rivals like TVS iQube and Ather Rizta. So let’s know the full details!

Yamaha and River partnership

Yamaha invested $40 million in Indian EV startup River in February 2025. This investment was made for River’s Series B funding. Now Yamaha is developing its new electric scooter RY01 on the platform of River Indie. River is handling engineering, testing and R&D, while Yamaha will focus on design and branding.

Yamaha RY01 Features

The new Yamaha RY01 electric scooter will use the battery management system and powertrain of the River Indie. This scooter will be designed according to Yamaha’s distinctive brand ethos which will give it a stylish and modern look. In terms of performance, it is expected to offer the same efficiency and range as the River Indie.

Manufacture

The scooter will be manufactured at River’s factory in Bengaluru. Production is expected to begin in the festive season and it is planned to be exported to 11 different global markets. This will not only increase the production scale but will also keep costs under control due to localization.

Rival

After the launch of Yamaha RY01, it will compete with many major electric scooter models. These include TVS iQube, Ather Rizta, Bajaj Chetak, Hero Vida V1 and the soon to be launched Suzuki e-Access. Currently, electric models account for about 6% of the total sales of two-wheelers in India.
