7th Pay Commission – 4% DA Hike Confirmed! Here How to calculate?

8th Pay Commission: Significant news has emerged for central government employees and pensioners. On one hand, work on the 8th Pay Commission is progressing rapidly. Meanwhile, the path is clear for a 4% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA). According to reports, the government may soon announce a 4% DA hike for July 2026. This decision will substantially increase the salaries and pensions of about 55 lakh central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners across the country.

When will the DA announcement be made?

For context, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has released the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI) data for July 2026. The AICPI-IW index rose by 1.3 points to reach 153.2, up from 151.9 in June. With a 4% hike now certain, the DA will increase from 60% to 64%.

When will the money be received?

The announcement regarding the 4% DA hike is likely to be made in October, around the time of Dussehra. Employees will also receive arrears covering July to September. Data for August is also expected to be released in early October.

Report expected in May 2027

Work on the 8th Pay Commission is also proceeding at a fast pace. The Central Cabinet approved its Terms of Reference on October 28, 2025, and constituted the commission on November 3, 2025. The commission has 18 months to submit its recommendations, meaning the final report is expected around May 2027. According to the rules, even though the report is due in 2027, the revised salaries, pensions, and allowances will be implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2026.

Commission Team Touring the Country

The 8th Pay Commission is currently visiting various states and Union Territories to hold discussions with employee unions. The Commission visited Jaipur on September 1, 2026. Upcoming visits include Puducherry on September 8, Chandigarh on September 16 and 18, and Bengaluru on October 7–8. Previously, the Commission has met with employee unions in Delhi, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Telangana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and Uttarakhand.

Important News for Pensioners

Relief has also been extended to pensioners who retired before 2026. On August 18, 2026, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) sent an official notice to the Department of Expenditure. This notice forwards the demands of the All India Defence Employees Federation and the Postal Pensioners Association, which seek a revision in the pensions of employees who retired before January 1, 2026. According to pension experts, this move could pave the way for older pensioners to receive the full benefits of the 8th Pay Commission.

Salary Hike to Exceed That of the 7th Pay Commission

According to employee organisations, the 8th Pay Commission will offer greater benefits than the 7th Pay Commission, even if the fitment factor is set lower. The 7th Pay Commission implemented a fitment factor of 2.57, raising the minimum basic salary from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. However, since the Dearness Allowance (DA) had already reached 125% at that time, the actual net benefit amounted to only ₹2,250.

8th Pay Commission Calculations

According to reports, even if the minimum fitment factor under the 8th Pay Commission is set at 2.1, the minimum basic salary would rise from ₹18,000 to ₹38,000. With the current DA (Dearness Allowance) of 58–60 per cent being factored in, employees will see a financial gain of ₹9,560. This time, the actual increase in employees’ salaries will be around 53 per cent, significantly higher than the 32 per cent increase under the 7th Pay Commission.
