Aadhaar Card Update: When discussing essential documents, the Aadhaar card is always first on the list. It is used universally. Fortunately, correcting any errors in your Aadhaar card has become quite simple. Changing the name on your Aadhaar card is straightforward. UIDAI has established specific rules for different scenarios—whether you want to change your name after marriage or change it entirely. Here are the documents required for these situations.
Why is changing your name important?
No matter where you go in the country, your Aadhaar card is the first document requested for identification. You also need it when filling out forms or making significant purchases. If the information on your Aadhaar card is not up-to-date, you could face difficulties. Therefore, keeping all the details recorded on your Aadhaar card current is crucial.
How can the name be changed after marriage or divorce?
If you wish to change your name or surname following marriage, you must submit a marriage certificate along with proof of identity, address, and relationship, in accordance with the UIDAI’s list of documents for Aadhaar updates. If a marriage certificate is unavailable, you must provide another valid certificate—containing a photograph—that reflects your previous name.
Similarly, if you wish to update your name after a divorce, you must submit the divorce decree issued by the family court. If this document does not include a photograph, you must provide an older certificate that does.
Is there a specific requirement for changing one’s full name?
If you wish to change your full name without the context of marriage or divorce, a Gazette Notification is the only document required. Please note that a Gazette Notification can only be used for a name change; it cannot be used to update your address or date of birth. Learn how to change your name.
If you want to change your name, have your documents ready beforehand; if you are changing your full name, you need a Gazette notification. Otherwise, prepare the necessary documents based on your specific situation. You can then proceed by visiting the UIDAI portal or an Aadhaar centre. When you apply for a name change, you will receive a form that you must fill out correctly.
An official will then verify your form and collect a ₹75 fee once the process is complete. Once the process is finished, you will receive a receipt containing an Update Request Number (URN). You can use this number to check your request status at any time.
