New Delhi: The 19th season of the Indian Premier League is set to commence on March 28. In the opening match of this season, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad will face off against each other. The match is scheduled to be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, starting at 7:30 PM. Meanwhile, ahead of the IPL season opener, the BCCI has taken a major decision to cancel the opening ceremony.

Traditionally, the BCCI organises an annual celebration during the inaugural match, where renowned artists perform. However, this time around, there will be no festivities of any kind during the IPL opening ceremony. Consequently, fans are left wondering why the BCCI has taken such a decision. If you are unaware of the reason, here is a simple explanation.

The Reason Behind the Cancellation of the IPL 2016 Opening Ceremony

The first match of the IPL season—between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad—will be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. A large number of spectators are expected to be present at the stadium to watch this match. The status regarding the hosting of matches at this stadium had remained uncertain, as 11 people lost their lives in a stampede that occurred there following the conclusion of the previous IPL season.

This tragic incident had deeply shaken the cricketing fraternity. Following the event, the BCCI had imposed a ban on hosting matches at this venue. Consequently, no celebrations of any kind will be held this time, in remembrance of the victims and those who lost their lives in that incident. Notably, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had claimed the IPL title in the previous season.

The very next day, RCB arrived at their home ground—the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium—to celebrate their victory. While the team management made a hasty decision to organise the event, adequate arrangements were not made on a large enough scale. A massive crowd gathered both inside and outside the stadium to witness RCB’s victory celebrations.

The primary reason for the excessive crowd turnout was the distribution of free tickets. Amidst the chaos, several fans attempted to force their way into the stadium. A stampede broke out within the massive crowd gathered outside the stadium, and in a matter of moments, 11 cricket fans lost their lives.

This incident raised serious questions regarding the mismanagement at the Bengaluru stadium, as well as the conduct of the management itself. For this very reason, the BCCI has issued guidelines for this year’s IPL opener, imposing a ban on any ceremonial celebrations and directing that tribute be paid to the deceased instead.

How many matches will be played this season?

The BCCI has decided to cancel the IPL 2026 opening ceremony in light of the stampede incident that occurred on June 4. This decision has been taken to show respect and pay tribute to the victims.

For your information, the BCCI has also released the complete schedule for the 19th season of the IPL. This season will run from March 28 to May 24. However, the schedule for the playoffs has not yet been officially released. Ten teams will participate in the tournament, collectively playing a total of 70 matches.
