New Delhi: The Indian Premier League is set to commence with great fanfare on March 28, 2026. There is palpable excitement among spectators regarding this grand event. However, did you know that this time around, there will be no opening ceremony for IPL 2026? The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a significant—and rather sensitive—decision regarding the grand kick-off of IPL 2026, leaving many surprised.

Last year, 11 people lost their lives in a stampede that occurred during the celebrations following RCB’s victory in Bengaluru. In light of this tragic incident, an opening ceremony will not be held this year. Following this harrowing event, RCB fans faced a backlash of public anger.

Celebrations Cancelled to Pay Tribute to the Deceased

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia made a major announcement during a conversation with *The Times of India*. He confirmed that this decision was taken to honour the memory of the 11 victims who lost their lives in the tragedy that unfolded in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025.

There will be no cultural or entertainment programs preceding the opening match—scheduled for March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium—between the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. This decision has been taken by the BCCI to pay homage to the departed souls.

The Conclusion of the 19th Season Promises to be Memorable

While the IPL will begin on a sombre and simple note, the BCCI is making preparations to ensure that the conclusion of the 19th season remains a truly memorable affair. In this regard, Devajit Saikia revealed that a grand closing ceremony is scheduled to be held on May 31, the day of the final match.

Last year, at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, and Karan Aujla made the occasion unforgettable with their vibrant performances. Similarly, fans can look forward to witnessing a similar display of glitz and glamour at the conclusion of this year’s tournament. No Ceremonial Celebration Held Even in the Year of the Pulwama Attack

This is not the first time the BCCI has cancelled a celebration due to a tragedy; previously, in 2019, the IPL opening ceremony was not held following the Pulwama attack. Furthermore, the funds allocated for the ceremony at that time were donated to the families of the martyred CRPF soldiers.
