Bangladesh’s participation in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 now appears to be in jeopardy. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the team’s firm stance has virtually eliminated their chances of playing in India. The ICC has issued an ultimatum until January 21st, after which the announcement of the new team’s entry is possible.

The ICC has clarified that the Bangladesh Cricket Board must decide its position by January 21st. Meanwhile, Arif Nazrul, the Bangladesh government’s sports advisor, has reiterated that his team will not travel to India under any circumstances. If Bangladesh is eliminated from the T20 World Cup, Scotland may receive direct entry based on their ICC rankings.

Arif Nazrul stated clearly on Tuesday that he would not succumb to any pressure and would not accept the ICC’s conditions. He also stated that he had no official information regarding Scotland’s entry in the absence of Bangladesh. Citing past events, he recalled that Pakistan had previously refused to play in India, after which the ICC had decided to accommodate their matches at other venues.

It’s worth noting that the BCB’s anger grew further when KKR dropped Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from its IPL squad. Bangladesh subsequently refused to play in India, citing security concerns. Following this decision, several rounds of talks were held between the ICC and the BCB, but no concrete solution was reached.

ICC has made it clear that Bangladesh’s group or match venue will not be changed. Now, there are only two options: either the Bangladesh board agrees to play in India, or Scotland will be included in the World Cup instead.

Bangladesh is currently placed in Group C for the 2026 T20 World Cup. This group also includes the West Indies, Italy, and Nepal. Scotland could be included in this group if Bangladesh is eliminated.
