Ration Subsidy Rules: Big news for ration card holders. There is a new update revealed regarding subsidy. Starting August 14, 2026, beneficiaries in Chandigarh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli will receive ration subsidies directly in their e-wallets as digital currency (e-Rupee). This initiative, part of the PMGKAY program, aims to combat ration theft.
A key feature of this scheme is that the funds are designated for specific use. This means you can only spend this digital currency on wheat or rice by scanning a QR code at a government ration shop (Fair Price Shop). In the past, some individuals would use the money deposited in their bank accounts for other personal expenses. However, with this new system, e-Rupee cannot be used for purchases like mobile recharges, clothing, or alcohol. The funds will only be accepted through QR codes at ration shops. Important to note: the money in the e-wallet will expire after 30 days. If the beneficiary does not buy ration within that month, the funds will be returned to the government account.
How can you register and complete KYC?
To take advantage of this service, you need to download the PNB Digital Rupee app. Then, visit your nearest ration office or camp and provide your registered mobile number to finish your KYC process. For help, you can call the toll-free number 1800-180-2068.
Where has this model been put into practice?
This digital approach was initially tested successfully in Puducherry and Gujarat. Due to its significant success, it is now being rolled out in Chandigarh and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Meanwhile more than 800 million people in the country receive monthly rations under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. The government periodically changes the rules under this scheme. The government has made another change. Under the new rules, eligible citizens can now purchase grains at reasonable prices from any ration shop in the country.
This system is similar to the one in place at a bank. Regardless of your bank account, you can withdraw money from your account at any ATM in the country. Now, the government has implemented a similar system for rations. This change was made under the “One Nation One Ration Card” (ONORC) mission.
Under this system, ration card holders will be able to collect their rations from various fair price shops at their convenience. It is hoped that this step will reduce long queues, make subsidized rations readily available, and improve the ration distribution system across the country.
