Post Office New Rules- Aadhaar Biometric Rules Changed, RD and SSY Updates Announced

Post Office Rules Change: If you have a savings account at the post office or have opened a Sukanya Samriddhi account for your daughter, this information is crucial for you. The Department of Posts has introduced significant changes in the deposit and withdrawal rules for its customers. An official order states that now, there is a simplified process for depositing or withdrawing money in Post Office Savings Account (POSA), Recurring Deposit (RD), and Sukanya Samriddhi Account through Aadhaar-based biometric authentication.

Deposits without pay-in slip up to Rs 50,000

The Postal Department has announced that deposits into various post office accounts can now be made without a pay-in slip. Customers can use their Aadhaar card for biometric verification. Under the new rule, customers can deposit up to Rs 50,000 into their post office savings accounts, RD, and Sukanya Samriddhi accounts at a time without any paperwork.

Easier withdrawals with Aadhaar authentication

Under the updated rules, withdrawals from the Post Office Savings Account (POSA) can now be made without a withdrawal slip. Customers can withdraw up to Rs 20,000 from their account at one time through Aadhaar authentication. This facility is applicable only for single type accounts and not for joint accounts or accounts in the name of a minor.

Transactions at any branch with Aadhaar-based e-KYC

Previously, post office customers could only transact at the branch where their account was opened. Now, with branch interoperability, account holders who have completed their Aadhaar-based e-KYC can transact at any post office branch nationwide. Accounts not authenticated with Aadhaar can only transact at their original home branch.

Paper process for high-value transactions

For high-value transactions exceeding the limit, the old paper process will still be in place. Customers will need to fill out a withdrawal application form and get approval from the respective accounts office. The new system is being implemented through the DREAM app in the Postal Department’s branch offices, converting the existing Customer Information File (CIF) into an Aadhaar-based e-KYC CIF via biometric authentication.

Mandatory mobile number from September 1

To enhance security, the Postal Department has mandated linking a mobile number for any transaction through the Dream app starting September 1, 2026. Customers must have an active mobile number for e-KYC or Aadhaar-based deposits and withdrawals. After September 1, accounts without a mobile number will not be able to transact through the app.
