PF Withdrawal Update: If you find yourself in need of funds for a medical emergency, your child’s education, a wedding, or constructing a house, the money in your PF account can be incredibly beneficial. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has simplified the rules for partial withdrawals from PF accounts, making them more flexible.
According to the new framework announced by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, salaried employees can now withdraw up to 75% of their PF balance in urgent situations.
EPFO has streamlined the withdrawal process. Previously, there were 13 different conditions and categories for partial withdrawals, which have now been condensed into three main categories:
1. Essential Needs: This covers expenses such as treatment for serious illnesses, higher education for children, and family weddings.
2. Housing Needs: Withdrawals can be made for buying a house, building a new home, making repairs or renovations, or repaying a home loan.
3. Special Circumstances: In this unique category, members can withdraw up to 75% of their PF balance without needing to provide a specific reason.
Reduced Service Period Requirement: from 7 years to just 12 months.
In the past, various withdrawals required service periods ranging from 3 to 7 years. The new rules have lowered the minimum membership requirement for most advance withdrawals to just 12 months, or one year.
Additionally, the withdrawal amount will now encompass not only your contribution but also the contributions from the employee and employer, along with the interest accrued on both. This means members will have access to more funds than before.
What can you withdraw if you lose job?
If you lose your job or decide to resign:
Instant Withdrawal: You can withdraw up to 75% of your total PF balance right away upon becoming unemployed.
Remaining 25%: The remaining 25% can only be withdrawn after being unemployed for 12 consecutive months.
Withdrawal limits for medical treatment, education and marriage
Medical emergencies: There is no fixed withdrawal limit for medical treatment. Members can apply repeatedly if needed.
Children’s Education: Money can be withdrawn for education up to a maximum of 10 times during the entire PF membership.
Marriage: Advance withdrawal is allowed up to a maximum of 5 times during the entire service period for marriage expenses.
PF is getting excellent interest of 8.25%
Currently, EPF accounts earn an annual interest rate of 8.25% for the financial year 2025-26. The government recently credited the interest amount to the accounts of over 340 million members on July 15, 2026. Therefore, keeping the remaining 25% in your account will ensure you continue to receive excellent returns.
