India EV Sales: The competition between electric players in the Indian automobile market has become even more exciting. The latest sales figures for March 2026 clearly show that Tata Motors remains the undisputed king of the EV segment, but a fierce battle is looming between Mahindra and JSW MG Motor for the second-place spot. This month, the entry of Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara and the Vietnamese company VinFast has created a new buzz in the market. If you, too, are planning to buy a new electric car in 2026, read this detailed article to learn about the performance and top-selling models of these powerful companies.

Tata EV

In the Indian electric car market, Tata Motors has once again proven that it is currently a tough challenge for any company to compete with. In the 31 days of March 2026, Tata achieved the number-one position by selling a total of 9, 494 electric cars. Tata’s resounding success is driven by its robust service network and vehicles available for every budget. Currently, the company sells powerful models like the Nexon EV, Punch EV, Curvv EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and Harrier EV. Customers’ trust in Tata continues to be driven by its affordable pricing and robust build quality.

Mahindra and MG

The most interesting and intense battle of March was witnessed between Mahindra and MG Motor. Mahindra & Mahindra performed exceptionally well, selling 5, 218 electric cars and securing the second position. JSW MG Motor, meanwhile, secured the third position with sales of 5, 113 units. The margin between Mahindra and MG was only 105 units. Mahindra’s growth was driven largely by its new models, such as the XEV 9S, XEV 9e, and BE6. On the other hand, MG’s Windsor EV remains a popular choice among customers, maintaining a strong hold in the mid-range EV segment.

Entry of Maruti and VinFast

The country’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, is also gaining momentum in the electric race. In March, Maruti sold a total of 940 units of its first electric SUV, the e-Vitara. Maruti’s inclusion has further boosted confidence in EVs among middle-class customers. Meanwhile, Vietnamese giant VinFast also surprised everyone by making it to the top five. VinFast sold a total of 688 units of its premium electric SUVs, the VF6 and VF7. The company isn’t stopping there; VinFast is launching its first electric 7-seater MPV, the VinFast VF MPV7, in India on April 15, 2026, which could create a significant stir in the market.
