ITR Filing Update: The deadline for submitting your Income Tax Return for the year 2026 is fast approaching, with only two days left. Rushing to file your return may lead to errors. If you find mistakes in your filed ITR before e-verification, you can easily cancel it and submit a corrected one.
Is it possible to cancel an ITR?

1. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.
2. Log in to your account.
3. Navigate to the e-file section.
4. Click on Income Tax Return.
5. Access the e-verification page.
6. Choose the option to Discard or Verify to cancel your ITR.
After canceling, you can proceed to fill out the ITR again with the correct details.
Five simple steps to file your ITR
1. Log in to the e-Filing portal using your PAN/Aadhaar and password.
2. Select the appropriate ITR form based on your income source.
3. Enter personal information, income details, deductions, and TDS accurately.
4. Review all details carefully and submit the ITR.
5. Complete e-Verification using Aadhaar OTP or Net Banking.
If you have already completed the verification process, canceling is not an option. Instead, you can file a revised return if needed.
How to file a Revised Return:
1. Log in to the Income Tax e-filing porta.
2. Navigate to the e-File section and choose Income Tax Return.
3. Select the relevant assessment year.
4. Opt for Revised Return (Section 139(5)).
5. Provide the correct information and submit the return.
Remember to e-verify the revised return afterwards.
The deadline for filing income tax returns for salaried individuals is July 31. It is crucial to file your return before this date to avoid any penalties.
When can ITR be cancelled?
This feature is only available if your ITR has not yet been e-verified. This option can also be applied to original, belated, and revised returns, provided they have not been verified. Fortunately, there is no limit on the number of unverified returns that can be discarded.
