ITR Filing 2026: Why Thousands of Taxpayers Are Revising Their Income Tax Returns? Know ASAP

ITR Filing 2026: There is a growing trend of individuals revising and filing their income tax returns (ITR). This increase can be attributed to the Income Tax Department’s enhanced data monitoring capabilities. The department now has access to a wealth of financial information like never before. As a result, many people realize after submitting their returns that additional income or transactions have been recorded. This leads them to file revised returns.

What is driving the rise in revised returns?

The primary factor is the Annual Information Statement (AIS). The AIS is a detailed document that outlines your income and financial activities. It encompasses details such as salary, interest, dividends, mutual fund and stock transactions, property transactions, foreign remittances, and significant expenses.

However, the AIS is not fully available all at once. Banks, corporations, and other entities update their data at different times. Consequently, individuals who file their ITR early may later find new entries in the AIS, necessitating the submission of a revised return.

Currently, the Income Tax Department is gathering data on a much larger scale than before. Thus, information that was overlooked during the initial filing can often come to light later.

Tax records are constantly evolving

The AIS and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) are no longer fixed documents. They can be updated even after a return has been filed. This means that new information may be added to your records post-filing. Hence, even if returns are filed correctly, adjustments may still be needed later.

Moreover, the Income Tax Department is increasingly utilizing data analytics and faceless scrutiny. The system automatically cross-references data, making it easy to identify any discrepancies.

In the past, minor mistakes might have been ignored. That is no longer the case. As a result, many taxpayers prefer to file their own revised returns instead of waiting for a notice.

Deadline for AY 2026-27?

Returns for assessment year 2026-27 will still be filed under the Income Tax Act, 1961. This will apply even though the new Income Tax Act, 2025 will come into effect from April 1, 2026.

As per the current rules, revised returns under Section 139(5) can be filed till December 31, 2026. However, this facility will not be available after the assessment is completed.

The Finance Bill 2026 proposes to extend this deadline to March 31, 2027. However, filing a revised return after December 2026 may attract a fee.

If this deadline is missed, you can file an updated return under Section 139(8A). This facility is available for 48 months. However, additional taxes may apply.

Why is it important to file correct ITR the first time?

It’s better to file the correct return the first time rather than filing revised returns repeatedly. Before filing your ITR, you should reconcile your AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS with your records. This includes documents such as Form 16, bank statements, broker statements, interest certificates, and capital gains statements.

If any incorrect information is displayed in the AIS, the ‘Report Incorrect Information’ facility can be used.

Who should be more careful?

People with multiple sources of income should exercise special caution. Those who invest in the stock market, mutual funds, engage in foreign transactions, or have capital gains should reconcile all documents before filing their ITR.
