India Post Announces Refund Facility for Cancelled Postal Bookings

India Post: Big news has emerged for the millions of customers who use postal services. India Post issued an official notification on Thursday (July 16). According to this, India Post has authorised the refund of postal charges in the event of a cancellation of a booking made either online or at the counter. The Department of Posts has implemented a new system, as per this official notification. You will now be eligible for a refund if you cancel a booking made online or at a Post Office counter. However, certain conditions must be met for this process to be completed.

According to the India Post notification, individuals who book postal items themselves via the web portal or mobile app can now cancel the booking before the Post Office accepts the item.

What is this new system?

Under the new system, if a customer has booked postal items themselves via the India Post web portal or mobile app and wishes to cancel, they can do so before the item is accepted by the Post Office. In such a case, the postage charges paid by the customer will be refunded.

What are the rules for refunds?

The notification states that “in the case of items booked at a Post Office counter, the sender may request the cancellation of the booking at the Post Office, or the Post Office may cancel the booking on the same day due to incorrect data entry.” Refunds for postage upon cancellation will be processed in accordance with administrative instructions issued by the Department of Posts from time to time.

Recall of international bookings

A sender of accountable outbound international postal items may recall the item from the booking office for any reason, subject to the administration’s instructions. The notified rules also allow the recipient of accountable inbound international postal items to have the item redirected from the delivery office upon payment of a fee.

However, no fee will be charged if the new address falls within the delivery area of the same Post Office. The new rule allows international senders to recall or redirect items from foreign destinations, subject to the policy of the concerned postal administration in accordance with the administrative instructions in force at the time.
