New Delhi: The fierce conflict currently unfolding between Iran and the United States has now begun to engulf West Asia as well, where tensions continue to escalate steadily. Iran, too, is mounting a strong response to the attacks being launched by the U.S. Amidst these mounting tensions, there appear to be no signs of any dialogue taking place to restore peace.
Given this situation, there is a strong possibility that the conflict could drag on for a considerable period. The most significant and recent development in this entire sequence of events is a major statement issued by U.S. President Donald Trump. This statement came in the wake of an attack on Kharg Island. He claimed that, during a major strike on this strategic Iranian island, the U.S. destroyed several military bases.
Donald Trump Makes a Major Statement
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran has now been completely weakened. He noted that while Iran seeks a settlement, no such agreement will be reached that is dictated on its terms. Furthermore, Trump issued a warning: if any attempt is made to disrupt the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. could reconsider its decision regarding attacks on oil infrastructure.
Additionally, an Iranian submarine was reportedly sunk. Kharg Island is considered the most critical hub for Iran’s oil exports; consequently, concerns regarding the global oil market have intensified following this attack. Moreover, according to energy experts, even if oil facilities were not directly targeted, the military strikes are expected to have an adverse impact on the export infrastructure.
Rising Unease in the Gulf Region
The possibility that the conflict between Iran and the U.S. could be protracted has further heightened tensions across the Gulf region. Amidst this backdrop, reports of attacks and security alerts have emerged from various Gulf nations. Incidents involving missiles, drones, or aerial interceptions have been recorded in Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has claimed to have successfully intercepted incoming drones and ballistic missiles. Qatar reported intercepting a missile attack. Security agencies in Kuwait and Bahrain also remained on high alert. In Oman, the United States has ordered non-essential government employees and their families to leave the country.
What did Trump say regarding the ships?
US President Donald Trump stated that arrangements could soon be made to provide US Navy protection to oil tankers transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters on the matter, he expressed hope that this arrangement would commence “very soon.”
Trump also asserted that the United States has inflicted significant damage upon Iran during recent attacks and that military action would continue for as long as necessary. He further mentioned that he has held discussions regarding this conflict with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
