New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed the rules framed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent discrimination based on caste,religion,and disability in higher education institutions and to promote equality. Upper-caste groups across the country were protesting against these new UGC rules.

A petition challenging these rules was filed in the Supreme Court. The petition was heard on January 29,2026. The hearing was conducted by a bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant,who,considering the seriousness of the matter and other factors,stayed the implementation of the new UGC rules.
