Rajasthan Panchayat Elections: If you are currently immersed in preparations for the Rajasthan Panchayat elections, you are undoubtedly awaiting the announcement of the voting dates. Prospective candidates have been engaged in their preparations for quite some time; however, the Election Commission has yet to declare the schedule, casting a pall of disappointment over their faces.
Nevertheless, the High Court issued an order a few days ago mandating that the Panchayat elections be conducted by April 15th, come what may. Despite this directive, the Election Commission has not announced the specific dates. In their bid to secure victory in the elections for *Sarpanch* (village head) and *Panch* (council member) posts, aspiring candidates continue to go door-to-door, engaging in humble solicitations and seeking the favour of the villagers.
They are making promises ranging from improving sanitation within the village to constructing and repairing roads and lanes. However, a palpable sense of frustration is evident due to the sluggish pace of the Election Commission’s operations.
Government May Approach the Court
The High Court has already issued directives to hold the elections by April 15th; however, the government has not yet been able to submit the report regarding the Other Backwards Classes (reservations). Consequently, the likelihood of delays and postponements is growing. The Rajasthan government itself may approach the High Court to seek an extension of the deadline.
Furthermore, there has been no official response or statement from the State Election Commission. According to experts, completing the remaining formalities associated with the elections is expected to take approximately one month. Given this scenario, conducting the elections by April 15th appears to be a rather difficult task.
Village Gatherings Abound; Political Equations Shift
Amidst the buzz surrounding the Rajasthan Panchayat elections, the villages are teeming with activity. Wherever one looks, there is a flurry of movement involving candidates. In the village lanes, pathways, and public squares, the sole topic of conversation revolves around the selection of *Panchs* and *Sarpanchs*. Alongside the candidates themselves, their supporters are also working tirelessly to mobilise public support.
To ensure that their preferred candidates emerge victorious, supporters are not only reaching out to their relatives with folded hands in supplication but are also pledging to stand by the villagers and share in their joys and sorrows. Whether by day or by night, wherever groups of people have gathered, the contenders can be seen approaching them—offering greetings and salutations—as they earnestly appeal for votes. In some areas, votes are even being solicited on caste lines; however, the likelihood of caste playing a dominant role in the Panchayat elections appears negligible.
Demand for Timely Elections Gains Momentum
Young aspirants vying for the post of Sarpanch in village Panchayats are submitting written appeals, demanding that the elections be held on schedule so they may put their fortunes to the test. Should the process of finalising OBC reservations face delays, it is widely believed that the elections would inevitably be postponed.
