New Delhi: The US recently provided significant relief to India by reducing tariffs, sending a message to the world that it remains a partner. On the other hand, tensions are high between the US and Iran. The two countries are at loggerheads, and several countries appear to be siding with Iran in this standoff.
US President Donald Trump has taken a major step against the countries supporting Iran. He has announced the imposition of tariffs on countries that increase trade with Iran. This decision is being seen as a way to exert psychological pressure on Iran. Trump had previously threatened to impose tariffs on countries that are business partners with Iran.

What is the new US order?
According to US President Donald Trump, if any country buys oil, gas, or other goods from Iran, or engages in any kind of trade with it, a tariff of up to 25 per cent may be imposed on goods coming from that country. The Trump administration says this decision was made keeping in mind US national security and foreign policy.
The US has accused Iran of spreading instability in the Middle East through its misguided policies. The Trump administration also says this is an attempt to force Iran to change its behaviour by putting economic pressure on it. This is why the US has already imposed several sanctions on Iran.

Which countries could be affected?
If the US imposes tariffs on countries trading with Iran, several major countries could be affected. Some countries continue to trade with Iran, and despite the US threat, they are unlikely to abandon Iran as a trading partner.
These include China, India, Turkey, and some Gulf countries. India is also a major importer of oil from Iran. If these countries continue to trade with Iran, they may suffer losses in their trade with the US. Several countries have expressed concern over the US decision.
