At the moment, iPhones come with a 48MP camera. Samsung might provide these 200MP sensors, which would be an expansion of Apple and Samsung’s current work. This big change will not happen for a few years.

Last September, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 17 series. The company could launch its first foldable phone this year in addition to the upcoming iPhone 18 series. Even if the changes seem small on paper, camera upgrades have always been a major part of Apple’s annual iPhone release.

According to a recent investor note, Apple is reportedly planning the largest enhancement to smartphone photography, but consumers might have to wait a few more years for it to happen.

Investment bank Morgan Stanley reported that Apple may add a 200MP camera to the iPhone lineup in 2028. The 2028 model, which would probably be a member of the iPhone 21 series, may be the first iPhone with a 200MP sensor if this schedule is accurate. These reports have, however, already come to light. Apple was allegedly testing a 200MP camera for iPhones internally last year, reportedly to the well-known Weibo source Digital Chat Station.

Even the most recent iPhones from Apple include a 48MP camera sensor with primary, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses. The main camera was the first to switch from 12MP to 48MP, and the other lenses followed suit.

Samsung might provide the sensor.

Samsung might provide the 200MP sensor for the 2028 iPhones, per Morgan Stanley. Even though Samsung and Apple have long been rivals in the smartphone market, this partnership would not be out of the ordinary because Samsung already provides a number of crucial parts for iPhones.
