Amazon and Flipkart, the two biggest online retailers in India, started offering their Big Billion Days (BBD) and Great Indian Festival discounts. The biggest shopping season of the year officially starts today. The biggest shopping season of the year begins with these deals, which

usually contributes close to 25% of these platforms’ yearly income. As on September 22nd, members of Flipkart Black and Amazon Prime, which are included in these firms’ membership programs, have been granted early access to the sale 24 hours early.

The sale this year coincides with the GST’s installation, which cut the tax rates on expensive goods like dishwashers, televisions, and air conditioners from 28% to 18%. Sales of goods that are in great demand throughout the holiday season are expected to go up during this time.

The Big Billion Days’ 12th season started on September 21st at Flipkart’s Bengaluru campus. Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy stated during the event that the company’s goal for this season is to reach one billion customers.

over Big Billion Days, Flipkart predicts 250–300 million new visitors, and over the festive season, around 350 million. According to the company, 400,000 workers will be spread across 4,500 locations, 19,500 pin codes, and warehouses, fulfillment centers, and delivery networks.

“Big Billion Days 2025 is looking to be our best event to date,” stated Pratik Shetty, VP of Growth and Marketing at Flipkart. Early patterns show that there is a greater demand for high-value products like electronics and major appliances, and that upgrades have been further stimulated by recent adjustments to the GST slab.

Also, he pointed out that Generation Z and buyers in tier-2 and tier-3 cities have responded strongly, increasing engagement through influencer-led showcases, live commerce, and short-form films.

In 19 locations, Flipkart has set up more than 100 fulfillment centers and around 400 micro-fulfillment hubs. In addition to offering quick delivery via Flipkart Minutes, the company’s dual supply chain model has created over 2.2 lakh new employment through holiday hiring, with women making up 20% of the workforce in large warehouses.

In the meantime, Amazon has added more than 150,000 seasonal job openings in 400 cities, six sorting hubs, and 12 additional fulfillment sites to its network. In order to pay costs in a variety of categories, the company has also increased the number of checkout financing options it offers, such as Amazon Pay Later.

Festive season sales are expected to increase by 27% to ₹1.2 trillion in 2025, from roughly ₹1 trillion in 2024 and ₹81,000 crore in 2023, according to a forecast by Datum Intelligence.

Both platforms are in a good spot to make the festive season the most successful ever for India’s $1.2 trillion e-commerce business, thanks to demand that has built up since August, GST reductions, and early access deals that begin this weekend.
