FASTag Update: Good news for vehicle owners using Fastag! You can now change the bank associated with your Fastag without needing to replace it. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, introduced a new feature called ‘OneTag’ at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026. This feature enables vehicle owners to switch their NETC Fastag bank while keeping their current tag.
What exactly is the OneTag feature?
OneTag was developed collaboratively by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Its main benefit is that the existing Fastag on your vehicle can still be used even after changing banks. In the past, if a customer wanted to switch banks, they had to deactivate their old Fastag, go through the process again with the new bank, and get a new Fastag. This was often a lengthy and inconvenient process. Now, with OneTag, this will be much simpler.
The Highway travel app will handle everything. Currently, the OneTag feature can be accessed through NHAI’s Highway Yatra mobile app. You can complete the FASTag portability process right from the app. First, your eligibility will be verified securely. After you give your consent, you can choose a new bank. Once the bank change is finalized, you will be onboarded with the new bank. Importantly, your FASTag’s Tag ID and vehicle registration number will remain unchanged after the switch, so the old FASTag on your vehicle will continue to function.
What roles will the old and new banks play? During the transfer process, the old bank will take care of all issues related to the old wallet, such as verification, wallet balance, refunds, pending transactions, and other related concerns. The new bank will then manage customer onboarding and provide FASTag services once the portability is completed.
What are the benefits for Fastag users?
OneTag will provide customers with greater flexibility in choosing their bank. It will reduce the need to repeatedly issue and affix new FASTags to their vehicles. This could also reduce the costs associated with reprinting, shipping, and re-insurance of FASTags.
