The EPFO periodically updates its digital systems to ensure users can easily access benefits such as claims, withdrawals, and other facilities. For 2026, the EPFO has taken necessary steps to further modernise its services.

Notably, the EPFO has introduced major changes to speed up and automate claim processing through the new EPFO 3.0 portal. The primary objective of this new system is to enable eligible individuals to receive advance claims without manual verification. Currently, the EPFO offers an interest rate of 8.25% to its users. Now, the question arises: what is Form 31? Let us understand this in detail.

What is EPFO 3.0?

EPFO 3.0 is a new digital system designed to make services fully online, faster, and more transparent. Under this new system, numerous processes have been automated to ensure quicker claim settlements. Previously, manual verification often delayed claim processing; however, the new auto-settlement system is significantly simplifying the process.

What is Form 31?

Form 31 is used to withdraw a PF advance from an EPF account. It does not allow withdrawal of the entire corpus; instead, it permits withdrawals only under specific circumstances. These include situations such as serious illness, medical treatment, purchasing a home, education, marriage, coping with natural disasters, and other prescribed conditions.

Key points for getting a Form 31 claim approved

Certain requirements have been established for the approval of Form 31 claims. If you meet the requisite criteria, the process can be automated. Keeping the claim amount within the prescribed limits ensures faster settlement. When applying, ensure you select the correct option; for instance, choose the ‘Illness’ option if claiming for medical treatment or an ailment, as fewer conditions apply to this category. Additionally, ensure your KYC is up to date, your bank passbook is legible, and your mobile number is linked to your Aadhaar; these steps facilitate a smooth claims process.

Then, go to “Track Claim Status” to check its current state.
You may see various statuses here, such as Under Process, Approved, Settled, Rejected, Payment Sent, etc.

Reasons for claim rejection

Claims are often rejected due to minor errors. Common reasons include the Aadhaar not being linked, PAN not being updated, incorrect bank KYC details, incorrect IFSC, a closed bank account, unclear documents, selecting the wrong reason for the claim, discrepancies in the name or date of birth, incorrect UAN details, etc.

Tips for faster claim settlement

To get your claim settled quickly, update your KYC beforehand. Ensure your Aadhaar and PAN are linked, and your bank account remains active. Upload the correct documents, claim only the necessary amount, select the appropriate category, and keep your mobile number and email ID up to date.

8.25% interest on EPF

For your information, an annual interest rate of 8.25% has been approved for EPF deposits for the financial year 2025-26. This interest applies to the amount deposited in the employees’ PF accounts. The interest is calculated based on the average balance maintained throughout the year and is subsequently credited to the users’ accounts.

When will the interest be credited?

The process of crediting interest to eligible accounts is carried out systematically. Once the interest amount is credited, it becomes visible in your EPF passbook.

How to check EPF balance

You can check your EPF balance in several ways, including the EPFO Member Portal, the UMANG App, the EPFO Passbook Portal, the SMS service, the missed call service, and the EPFO helpline. Additionally, if your mobile number is registered with your UAN, you can check your balance via a missed call.

How long does it take for a claim to be approved?

For your information, a claim is typically approved within three days. However, the process also depends on eligibility, KYC compliance, the submission of necessary documents, system verification, and EPFO’s internal procedures. If eligibility criteria are met, the claim settlement can be expedited through the auto-settlement process.

Conclusion

For your information, EPFO has introduced certain changes to enhance its digital services and expedite the PF claim process. You can apply using Form 31 for this purpose, as it eliminates unnecessary delays in claim processing.
