NCERT – In light of the growing advancements in AI across the country and the world, the Indian government has taken a significant step. Students in classes 11 and 12 will now be taught about Artificial Intelligence. The government aims to provide students with knowledge of Artificial Intelligence during their school education.

For this purpose, NCERT has formed a special textbook development team to prepare the textbooks. The work of developing the curriculum is expected to begin soon. The Union Ministry of Education shared this information in Parliament. The ministry stated that this initiative is part of a broader plan to incorporate AI into education under the National Education Policy 2020. This is considered a major step by the government.

AI Curriculum to be Developed Soon

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha (lower house of Parliament), the Ministry of Education clearly stated that the AI-related curriculum and textbooks for classes 11 and 12 are being developed in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework – School Education. This syllabus aims to prepare students for new technologies and make them eligible for future jobs.

The government also provided important information, stating that NCERT has included a project based on animation and games in the Class 6 vocational education textbook. This project incorporates the use of AI tools. This will help students develop technology-based thinking at an early stage.

From Which Class Will AI Education Begin?

The Modi government stated that AI and computational thinking are key pillars of future education. Furthermore, AI education will be implemented in all schools from Class 3 onwards from the 2026-27 academic session. This decision is considered to be fully in line with the reforms of the NEP 2020.

Earlier, CBSE had prepared a draft curriculum based on AI and computational thinking for students from classes 3 to 12. AI and computational thinking are to be taught as compulsory subjects in classes 9 and 10.
