Divyang Pension Update: The Central Government has approved changes to the pension scheme for individuals with disabilities (Divyangjan). Under the new system, the disability threshold required to avail of the scheme has been reduced from 80% to 40%. Furthermore, the minimum age requirement has been removed, allowing eligible children to benefit from the scheme from birth.
The Central Government has approved the continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme for the next five years (until October 2026) and has sanctioned revisions to the rules for the disability pension. The programme has been renamed the ‘PM Samajik Madad Scheme’.
What changes have been made to the disability pension rules?
The government has revised the disability pension scheme. The disability threshold has been lowered from 80% to 40%. Additionally, the age restriction has been lifted; previously, a minimum age of 18 was required to receive the pension, but now it is available from birth. The pension amount has also been increased. Eligible beneficiaries will now receive a monthly pension of ₹375, up from ₹300. For individuals aged 80 years or older, the pension has been increased from ₹500 to ₹625.
Who is eligible for the pension scheme?
The new system aims to include a larger number of individuals with disabilities. To qualify, certain conditions must be met: applicants must possess a valid disability certificate, and the level of disability must be at least 40%. Additionally, the family must meet specific criteria related to poverty and eligibility. Therefore, having a 40% disability alone does not automatically guarantee the pension; other prescribed conditions must also be fulfilled.
When will these rules come into effect?
The government has stated that further guidelines regarding eligibility, the number of beneficiaries, and the amount of assistance will be issued and implemented within three months. Therefore, before submitting an application, be sure to consult with your state’s Social Welfare Department for information on the new rules and the application process.
