DA Hike 2026: Central government employees are looking forward to a rise in their dearness allowance (DA). In fact, an increase in the DA for the July-December half-yearly period is anticipated. This is why central government employees are keeping a close eye on the government’s cabinet meeting. Another cabinet meeting took place on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several significant decisions were made during this meeting. Now, the question arises: has any decision been made regarding the increase in allowances for central government employees? Let’s explore the details.
Key decisions made by the government
On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved four projects from the Railway Ministry, with a total cost of around Rs 9,450 crore. These projects include the development of a 173-kilometer fourth railway line connecting Kharagpur in West Bengal to Bhadrak (Ranital) in Odisha, as well as a 75-kilometer fourth line from Bhadrak to Haridaspur in Odisha.
Moreover, projects have been sanctioned to construct a 90-kilometer third and fourth rail line between Gummidipundi in Andhra Pradesh and Gudur in Tamil Nadu, along with a 72-kilometer third and fourth rail line between Cuttack and Paradip (Badabandha) in Odisha. These new initiatives will expand the existing Indian Railways network by approximately 410 kilometers. The completion of these projects is targeted for the 2030-31 timeframe. The four projects will span eight districts across West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
This will enhance rail connectivity for around 6,448 villages, benefiting a total population of about 6 million. According to the Ministry of Railways, these initiatives will contribute to the country’s climate objectives. They are expected to lower logistics costs, decrease oil imports by roughly 130 million liters, and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 650 million kilograms, which is comparable to planting 26 million trees.
Decision on National Highway-22 also
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the four-lane upgrade of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa section of National Highway 22 in Bihar at a cost of Rs 3,590.73 crore. The project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The total capital cost will be Rs 3,590.73 crore and the total project length will be 82.578 kilometers. The project will serve as a major link connecting the India-Nepal border at Sonbarsa to economic centers like Muzaffarpur on National Highway 27 (East-West Corridor). This project will significantly alleviate traffic congestion in densely populated areas such as Muzaffarpur, Maksudpur, Runni Saidpur, Thumma, Dumra, Bhutahi, and Sonbarsa.
The project involves the construction of seven major bridges, including a 340-meter-long main bridge over the perennial Bagmati River. In addition, three railway overbridges and two flyovers will be constructed, measuring 1,170 meters and 270 meters in length, respectively. These constructions will ensure smooth traffic flow and safe, fast travel.
Was there an announcement on dearness allowance as well?
No decision was made on a DA hike at the Union Cabinet meeting. If all goes well, a DA hike for central employees will be announced in October. It’s worth noting that central employees are scheduled to receive a DA hike for the July-December half-year. This increase is expected to be 3%. If this happens, the allowance for central employees will increase to 63%.
