Cash Limit at Home: If you keep cash at home, you must understand the relevant rules. While some people prefer to keep large amounts of cash at home, doing so can lead to scrutiny if an investigation occurs. The Income Tax Department does not prohibit keeping cash at home; however, understanding the regulations ensures you avoid any issues with the department.
Know the Income Tax Department’s Rules
According to Income Tax Department regulations, there is no fixed limit on the amount of cash one can keep at home. In other words, there is no legal cap; you could theoretically keep an unlimited amount—even ₹1 crore or more—at home. However, the Income Tax Department has laid down certain conditions, and you must be aware of them.
Cash Must Have a Valid Source
Regardless of the amount of cash you keep at home, you must be able to account for the source of every single rupee. You must be able to clearly explain how and from where you acquired the cash. If your home is subjected to an Income Tax investigation, you will be required to provide proof regarding the source of the funds. Failure to clearly explain the source of the cash could lead to complications.
Tax Liability on Cash Kept at Home
You are expected to pay tax on the taxable portion of your earnings. Consequently, the cash kept at home should align with your declared income; if the cash exceeds your declared income, you must account for the excess amount. If the cash exceeds your declared income and you cannot provide a valid source, you could face heavy taxes and penalties under Section 69A of the Income Tax Act.
Maintain Income Documentation
Your income is not derived solely from your salary. This includes interest earned on your savings account, as well as income generated from businesses, investments, or real estate. Once all these income streams are aggregated, the resulting taxable amount is subject to taxation. Since the Income Tax Department monitors every source of your income, it is crucial to preserve all relevant documentation; you will need these records when filing your tax returns.
Know the Cash Holding Limits
The annual limit for depositing cash into a bank account is ₹10 lakh; this limit applies to the total cash deposited throughout the year, not to a single transaction. If you deposit more than ₹10 lakh into your account, you are required to disclose the source of the funds and pay the applicable taxes. However, if you maintain a proper record of every cash transaction, there is no cause for concern.
