The Ayushman Bharat Yojana provides free treatment to poor people in the country. According to a PIB release in July 2025, the government has issued Ayushman cards to 41 crore people under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan-Arogya Yojana.

With the Ayushman card, people can get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. The scheme covers 31,466 hospitals across the country, including 14,194 private hospitals. Ayushman cardholders can get treatment in any hospital included in the scheme’s panel.

However, sometimes hospitals in the panel refuse treatment. If a hospital refuses treatment, cardholders can file a complaint in different ways. Except in certain cases, a hospital in the panel cannot refuse treatment if the required treatment is available. If a hospital does refuse, the government can take action and even remove the hospital from the scheme’s panel.
