Indian Railways: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has made a big announcement on passenger safety. He claims that the government will make Indian Railways completely safe within the next 6 years. From then on, there will be a comfortable journey on Indian Railways. Then will there be no train accidents in the country. Do you know why?
Why can the Railway Ministry say this so strongly
The Railway Ministry is continuously taking steps to prevent train accidents. Under this, the Kavach system is being installed in 200 locomotives every day. If the work continues at this pace, Kavach will be installed in the entire railway network of the country within the next six years. This is what Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has claimed. He said that very soon Indian Railways will touch a new record of zero train accidents and zero train derailments.
What did the Railway Minister say
Recently, the Railway Minister said that the work of installing Kavach-4 engines (rail engines) and tracks is being done on priority. He claimed that the entire railway network of the country will be equipped with KAVACH in the next six years.
Work underway in 68 workshops
Senior railway officials said that the railway is installing KAVACH-4 in 68 locomotive maintenance workshops of the country. Earlier, it took about 15 days to install KAVACH in a locomotive, which has been reduced to six days. Now KAVACH-4 is being installed in a locomotive in just 22 hours. Each workshop has the capacity to install KAVACH in about 10 to 12 locomotives daily. However, everything depends on how many locomotives are being fitted with KAVACH in the workshop.
Every locomotive coming for maintenance will be fitted with KAVACH-4
After ensuring the ground work and technical facilities, the Railway Ministry has directed that KAVACH-4 will be installed on all electric locomotives coming to the loco workshop for maintenance for more than 24 hours.

Targets for the next two years

This is how much money will be spent on a locomotive
Initially, nine thousand railway workers were trained to install KAVACH on such a large scale. Currently, tenders have been given for installing KAVACH on a total of 15 thousand kilometers of railway tracks. So far, KAVACH has been installed on one thousand kilometers of railway tracks. These include the Mumbai to Baroda and Delhi to Palwal routes. The cost of installing Kavach on a locomotive is Rs 80 lakh, while the cost of installing Kavach per kilometre of track is Rs 60 lakh.
How does Kavach work?
Kavach systems need to be installed on both the railway track and the engine. When a Kavach-equipped train passes through the Kavach-equipped track, the speed and position of the train are detected through sensors. Similarly, data from the train coming from the front is also fed into the system. Considering the speed of both the trains and the short distance, the Kavach system automatically stops both the trains. Currently, work is underway to install Kavach on the engine (loco) and the track. After improving the first three versions of Kavach, the Railways launched Kavach-4 on 16 July 2024. Now Kavach-4 is being installed everywhere.
