If you are a UPI user and do most of your transactions through it, then now you need to be alert. From August 1, 2025, some important rules related to UPI are going to change in the country. In such a situation, people who make payments daily through apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, or Paytm need to pay special attention. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI, is bringing these new rules to make UPI faster, safer, and reliable.

New rules of NPCI

NPCI has made these changes to reduce the increasing burden on the UPI system and the recent disruptions.

Limit on checking balance

From August 1, users will be able to check their balance only 50 times a day from their UPI app. Checking the balance repeatedly puts unnecessary pressure on the server, which slows down the speed of transactions. This rule will help keep the system running smoothly.

Limit on viewing linked bank accounts

Now all users will be able to view the bank account linked to their phone number on any one app a maximum of 25 times a day (View Limit). This has also been done to reduce unnecessary load on the server.

Limit on checking payment status

Users will be able to check the payment status of any transaction only 3 times a day (Check Limit). There should be a gap of at least 90 seconds in each of these 3 attempts. NPCI says that many users keep checking the status of the same payment repeatedly, which increases the load on the system.

Time limit in autopay transactions

A fixed time limit will be set for autopay transactions on different platforms. This timing will be before 10 am, from 1 pm to 5 pm, and after 9:30 pm in a day. An autopay transaction means that the amount of any subscription, SIP, EMI, or bill is automatically deducted at a fixed time. This rule will make autopay processes more systematic.

Limit of payment reversal

The limit of chargeback, i.e., payment reversal, has been fixed. Now you can request a chargeback 10 times in 30 days. You can request a chargeback only 5 times from any one person or organization. This rule has been brought to prevent fraud and to curb the misuse of the system.

For whom are these changes and why

All these changes are for all UPI (Unified Payment Interface) users. But if you do not check the balance or status often, then there will be no major problem for you. NPCI is bringing new rules to simplify UPI so that unnecessary activities can be curbed.

In recent times, especially between April and May 2025, complaints related to interruptions and delays in sending or receiving payments have increased. NPCI says that the main reason for this is that many users keep checking the balance continuously or keep checking the status of a payment repeatedly for minutes. This puts more load on the system and affects the speed of transactions.
