UPI Biometric – Now soon you may not need to enter PIN to make UPI payment. Actually NPCI is preparing for a big change. Soon you may be able to complete UPI payment through your face or fingerprint instead of PIN. NPCI will use biometrics data for this. In such a situation, facial recognition will be verified through the phone’s FaceID and fingerprints will be verified through the fingerprint sensor.

Let us tell you that in many smartphones there is an option to unlock the phone by showing the face but it does not use biometric data. In such a situation, those sensors of the phone will be used to complete UPI payment which can verify biometric data. Let us know about this in detail.

Why is the PIN system being changed?

Till now, to make UPI payments, the user has to use a 4 digit PIN. This PIN is set when the user creates a UPI ID with his bank account. Although using PIN for UPI payments is a safe method, but if someone somehow finds out your PIN, it can be dangerous for anyone. There have been cases where someone’s bank balance has been cleared by finding out someone’s UPI PIN.

In such a situation, approving payments through biometric authentication will increase the security of UPI payments even more. According to the report of Economic Times, NPCI is considering keeping PIN as an option for UPI payments.

What do the experts say?

Talking about this change, Aakash Sinha, CEO of Cashfree Payments, says, “The elimination of the need to enter PIN will make transactions faster. This will save time at checkout and every transaction will be linked to the person, not just the device.” Experts also say that this change will reduce cases of online fraud.

This is because it is possible to find out or copy someone’s PIN but it is impossible to copy someone’s fingerprints or face scan. Rohit Mahajan, founder of Plutos ONE, says about this change, “There will be no hassle of remembering PIN. This will benefit the elderly and people in rural areas who are less digitally literate. Now they will get a chance to transact in a safe and easy way.”

What will be the challenges?

Talking about the challenges that will come after implementing this change, Rahul says that it will require data privacy, user consent and strong technical systems. According to the June 2025 report, the number of UPI transactions has reached 18.39 billion and the total value is Rs 24.03 lakh crore. As its scope increases in the future, the use of biometric methods will further improve the facility of UPI payments.

What do you have to do?

At present, the user does not need to do anything about it. You will be able to use UPI payments in the same way as you have been using them till now. As soon as NPCI brings this update, we will bring details about using and setting it up.
