Traffic Rules: Now, taking traffic rules lightly could end up being quite expensive. To minimize road accidents and enforce stricter regulations, the central government has implemented significant amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act. According to the new guidelines, repeated minor infractions can lead to the suspension of a driver’s license.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made it clear that if a driver breaks traffic rules five or more times within a year, their driving license may be suspended for three months. This regulation took effect on January 1. Its aim is to deter drivers who frequently violate rules without taking them seriously.

Will old challans also be included?

In the past, license cancellation or suspension was restricted to serious offenses such as vehicle theft, speeding, overloading, or assaulting passengers. Now, common violations like not wearing a helmet, failing to wear a seatbelt, and running a red light are also considered if they occur repeatedly.

The government has confirmed that previous invoices will not be included. According to the ministry, each year will be assessed independently. This means that invoices or violations from the prior year will not contribute to the new year’s five-infraction tally. Records will reset on January 1st each year.

Will you have a chance before my license is suspended?

The government has stated that in accordance with the principles of natural justice, every driver will be given a complete opportunity to present their case before their license is suspended or revoked. Authorities will not take immediate action. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 2026, have also tightened regulations concerning toll arrears.

Has there been any tightening of toll rules?

If there are outstanding tolls, an NOC will not be issued for selling the vehicle or transferring it to another state.

Fitness certificates will not be renewed.

Commercial vehicles will not receive a national permit.

Why is the government being strict ?

According to transportation experts, the government is preparing to implement a barrier-free toll system (free-flow tolling). This requires digital toll collection to ensure the government doesn’t lose revenue and the system runs smoothly.
