the central government has launched the “Solar Rooftop Subsidy Scheme 2025” or “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana” in 2024-25 . This scheme is specifically for poor and middle-class families so that they can meet their electricity needs and save on electricity bills by installing solar panels on their rooftops.

Aim of the scheme

This scheme will not only reduce household energy costs but also protect the environment. The government aims to install solar panels in over 10 million households under this scheme. This will provide each family with approximately 300 units of free electricity per month, resulting in annual savings of millions of rupees. The government provides a subsidy of up to 40% of the total cost of solar panels under this scheme. Solar panels can range from 1 to 10 kilowatts in capacity, allowing families to install rooftop solar systems based on their needs.

In terms of subsidy amount, a 1 kilowatt solar panel receives a subsidy of approximately ₹30,000, up to ₹60,000 for up to 2 kilowatts, and up to ₹78,000 for more than 3 kilowatts. This subsidy is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account, making it easier for the public to avail the benefits. The scheme will also reduce pressure on power companies by meeting domestic electricity demand with solar energy. Under this scheme, a family can receive up to 300 units of free solar electricity per month. This will not only provide significant relief on electricity bills but will also increase the use of non-conventional energy sources, helping to reduce pollution. Additionally, new solar installations will strengthen the power grid to meet the growing demand for electricity.
