FASTag Users Update: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a major step to further simplify the FASTag system in India. From February 1, 2026, Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification will no longer be required for new FASTags for cars, jeeps, and vans. The aim is to reduce delays in obtaining and using FASTags, the hassle of repeatedly submitting documents, and user complaints. Previously, KYV was mandatory for vehicle verification after the FASTag was issued. This often required people to upload their RC, send photos, and re-verify the tag, even with valid documents, leading to delays and increased inconvenience in tag activation.

Verification will be completed based on the RC
Now, the responsibility for this process has been given to the banks. Banks will verify all vehicle-related information before issuing the FASTag. Vehicle verification will be done through the VAHAN database, and if the information is not found there, the verification will be completed based on the RC. This means that there will be no need for a separate KYV after the tag is activated.
KYV process bypassed
KYV was previously an additional verification step for FASTag, ensuring that the tag was linked to the correct vehicle and that no incorrect or duplicate tags were being used. However, in practice, this process often caused delays and technical difficulties, so it has been removed.

New rule to be implemented from February 1st
After February 1, 2026, KYV will not be mandatory for new car FASTags. All necessary checks will be completed before the tag is issued. Existing FASTag holders will also no longer need to undergo regular KYV. Re-verification will only be required in cases where a complaint arises, such as the tag being linked to the wrong vehicle, misuse, or improper issuance.
What will be the benefit for vehicle owners?
This change will benefit ordinary vehicle owners. The process of buying and using FASTag will now be faster and easier than before. The tag can be used immediately upon receipt, eliminating the need for repeated document uploads or visits to the bank and customer care. Additional verification will only be required in complaint-based cases, thus saving users from unnecessary hassles.
