Ration Card: Before the advent of the Aadhaar card, the ration card was the most important document. This card not only provides the poor with affordable rations but also benefits them under various government schemes. However, recently, cases of ration card fraud have been on the rise. Ineligible individuals are obtaining fraudulent ration cards and taking advantage of government schemes. There are also cases where ration is being obtained in the name of deceased individuals. To address these problems, the government is conducting a large-scale verification process, resulting in the cancellation of ration cards for ineligible individuals.
The government has removed the names of 22.5 million people from ration cards under the free monthly ration scheme. This action has been taken over the last four to five months. Those removed from ration cards were not eligible for the scheme. A senior Food Ministry official said on Tuesday that they want to ensure that the benefits of this scheme are only available to eligible individuals.
Ration cards are being made to avail benefits of schemes
It is being observed that most people have obtained ration cards but do not meet the eligibility criteria. These cards have been made on the basis of fake documents. While most people’s ration cards are in good condition, they have not been receiving any ration for the past six months. Initial investigations revealed that these families do not need rations, but are using the ration cards to avail benefits of various government schemes. For example, a ration card is required to obtain an Ayushman card, which provides cashless treatment up to Rs 10 lakh in Delhi and Rs 5 lakh nationwide. Ration cards are also useful for admission under the EWS quota. Consequently, the government is now preparing to exclude such individuals from the PDS system.
