Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin is one of the most ambitious schemes of the Central Government, which aims to provide pucca houses to the poor and homeless people of the country. This initiative, which started in 1996 as Indira Awas Yojana, was revised in 2016 and launched as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin. Under this scheme, financial assistance is given to the beneficiaries to build a pucca house, as well as facilities like a toilet, a kitchen, electricity, water, and a gas connection are also ensured. Eligible people are given money in the form of installments directly into their bank accounts.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 April 2016. The goal of this scheme is to provide pucca houses to those families who are still living in kutcha houses or who do not have any permanent shelter to live in. The government aims to provide a roof and basic amenities to every needy family. Under the scheme, the minimum size of the house has been fixed at 25 square meters, which will also include the kitchen.
