PM Fasal Bima Yojana: The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, also known as PMFBY, is an important scheme run by the government to protect farmers from natural calamities and other risks. The objective of this scheme is to safeguard farmers’ agricultural production and protect them from financial losses. PMFBY provides insurance coverage for all types of natural risks from sowing to harvesting.
It is worth noting that under this scheme, crop insurance is done through area-based assessment, which provides security to farmers at a low cost. Under this, farmers pay only a minimum premium, and the remaining amount is borne by the state and central governments.
Which farmers can avail the benefits?
All farmers who cultivate crops in notified areas are eligible for PMFBY benefits. This includes tenants, sharecroppers, or any other farmers. Under the scheme, the farmer must have actual ownership or interest in the insured crop. In addition, a valid land ownership certificate or lease is required.

For your information, farmers should note that the application must be submitted within two weeks of the start of sowing, and no prior compensation claim should have been made for the same crop.
When will crop insurance benefits not be available?
If the crop is grown in a non-notified area, the benefits of the scheme will not be available. Additionally, compensation will not be provided for losses that occur outside the crop cycle or for losses not related to the sowing and harvesting period.
What are the necessary documents?
Some important documents are required for applying to PMFBY. These include a passport-size photograph, bank passbook, land record proof (RoR/LPC or valid agreement), identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, NREGA job card), address proof (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, electricity bill), and crop declaration form.
