PM Surya Ghar Yojana: In winter, geysers and room heaters, and in summer, ACs and coolers, significantly increase electricity consumption. This directly impacts the monthly electricity bill. In this era of inflation, rising electricity costs disrupt household budgets. In this context, a government scheme has emerged as a major relief for common people: the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme.

PM Surya Ghar Yojana was launched in February 2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched this ambitious scheme in February 2024. The scheme aims to promote rooftop solar systems across the country and provide affordable and clean energy to people. The central government has set a target of installing solar panels on one crore homes by 2027. Under this scheme, eligible families receive up to 300 units of free electricity every month.

The scheme has reached millions of homes

According to government data, by December 2025, approximately 19.45 lakh rooftop solar systems had been installed in the country, benefiting more than 24 lakh families. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala have seen the highest number of solar panel installations. As awareness of this scheme spreads, the number of families receiving zero electricity bills is also increasing.

One-time investment, years of relief

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is especially beneficial for those who want to get rid of electricity bills for the long term. The average lifespan of a solar panel is about 25 years, meaning that after a one-time investment, electricity costs can be virtually eliminated for more than two decades. However, before installing the panels, it is essential to assess the daily electricity consumption of the household so that a solar system of the appropriate capacity can be installed.

Subsidies reduce the cost

The biggest advantage of this scheme is the subsidy provided by the government. For solar systems up to two kilowatts, assistance of up to ₹30,000 per kilowatt is provided. For a three-kilowatt capacity system, this subsidy increases to up to ₹78,000. This significantly reduces the initial cost of installing solar panels, making it easily accessible to average families.

Choose Solar Panels According to Your Household Consumption

If a house has common household appliances such as fans, refrigerators, LED lights, air conditioners, or geysers, the daily electricity consumption can be 8 to 10 units. In this case, a two-kilowatt solar panel is considered sufficient. The panel capacity can be increased if the need and consumption increase.

Easy Online Application Process

The application process for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana is completely digital. Applicants need to visit the official website and select their state and electricity distribution company. After that, they can log in using their consumer number and mobile number to complete the application. After approval, the solar panels can be installed through a vendor registered with the DISCOM (electricity distribution company). After installation and net metering, the subsidy amount is directly transferred to the bank account.
