Having a bank account is very important in today’s time. A basic savings bank account is opened for people who are deprived of banking facilities. It is called the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Account. This account offers many benefits. If you wish, you can open this account at any bank. The most special thing about this account is that you do not need to maintain any minimum balance in it. Today, a large number of Jan Dhan accounts have been opened across the country, with several lakh crore rupees deposited by common people. If you feel the need, you can easily open this account.

Benefits of Accident Insurance and Life Cover

According to SBI, the Jan Dhan account offers benefits like accident insurance through the active RuPay debit card. It provides life cover of ₹2 lakh and accidental cover of ₹2 lakh. Life cover is available at an annual fee of ₹436, while accidental cover costs just ₹20 annually. Additionally, you also get the facility of an overdraft of up to ₹10,000. Interest is earned on the money deposited in this Jan Dhan account under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.

Jan Dhan Account is Eligible for These Schemes

RuPay debit cards are provided to account holders for free. Another significant benefit of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan account is eligibility for schemes like Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY), and Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency Bank (Mudra) Yojana.

You can also get more information by contacting the national toll-free numbers 1800 11 0001 and 1800 180 1111. According to government data, by May 22, 2024, a total of 52.30 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened across the country, with a total deposit of ₹2,28,057.47 crore.

Documents Required to Open a Jan Dhan Account

If you have an Aadhaar card or Aadhaar number, no other documents are required. If the address has changed, self-certification of the current address is enough. If the Aadhaar card is unavailable, one of the following government-valid documents will be required: voter ID card, driving license, PAN card, passport, or MNREGA card. If your address is included in these documents, they can serve as both proof of identity and address.
