Passport Seva 2.0: The Indian government has launched the e-passport system under Passport Seva 2.0 to further modernize passport services. Now, citizens will receive a high-tech e-passport with a microchip when applying for a new passport or renewing an old one. This can be called a smart version of the paper passport. Its purpose is to secure identity, prevent fraud, and expedite the immigration process at airports. In the future, the passport will not only be a travel document but also a secure medium for your digital identity.

How secure is the e-passport?
The biggest feature of the e-passport is the microchip embedded inside. This chip securely stores your digital photograph, fingerprints, and other biometric information. This data is encrypted, making it difficult to duplicate or tamper with. This technology will significantly prevent passport fraud, identity theft, and illegal entry. At international airports, the information is automatically registered in the system as soon as the passport is scanned at the e-gate, making the immigration process faster and easier.

How to apply?
If you have an old passport and it is still valid, you don’t need to replace it immediately. You will receive an e-passport only when you apply for a new passport or apply for a renewal. The application process will remain the same as before, online. You will have to fill out the form on the Passport Seva portal, schedule an appointment, and get your documents verified at the nearest passport center. You will need to provide the necessary documents, such as an Aadhaar card, a birth certificate, and address proof. Additionally, the applicant should not have any serious criminal record.
