PAN 2.0 is the latest project by the Income Tax Department aimed at providing secure digital e-PAN cards. These new PAN cards come with a QR code, enhancing security and reducing the risk of fraud. Existing PAN cardholders do not need to apply for a new PAN card. However, there are added benefits to upgrading. Meanwhile, PIB Fact Check has flagged fake emails circulating on social media about e-PAN card downloads.
It is important to note that these emails are fraudulent. Never respond to calls, messages, or emails requesting sensitive or financial information. The Income Tax Department does not ask for personal details through email.
Fraud via Email and Messages
According to the Income Tax Department, fraudsters often use financial institutions, popular social websites, and online payment platforms to lure the public. These scams are mostly sent through emails or messages, directing users to enter sensitive details on fake websites. These fake sites are designed to resemble the original ones, often including logos and other details to appear legitimate.
Do Not Open Any Attachments in Emails or Messages
The Income Tax Department advises not to open any attachments received in suspicious emails or messages, as they may contain harmful code that could infect your computer. Additionally, avoid clicking on any suspicious links.
What to Do if You’ve Clicked on a Suspicious Link
- If you’ve clicked on a suspicious email or phishing website, do not enter your bank account, credit card details, Aadhaar card information, or other confidential details.
- Also, avoid cutting and pasting a link from a suspicious message into your browser, as it may lead you to a different, potentially dangerous website.
Use Firewalls and Antivirus Software for Protection
To stay safe, use updated anti-virus software, anti-spyware programs, and firewalls. These tools can protect your computer from harmful software that may track your activities or damage your device without your knowledge. Regularly updating your software ensures better protection against phishing attacks.
How to Report Fake Emails and Websites
If you receive a suspicious email or find a suspicious website, send the email or website URL to webmanager@incometax.gov.in. You should also CC the email to incident@cert-in.org.in to report the incident.
