With the beginning of the year 2026, a serious concern has arisen for millions of PAN cardholders. The deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking, set by the Income Tax Department (December 31, 2025), has passed, and the government has not announced any extension. Therefore, those who did not link their PAN with Aadhaar in time may find their PAN cards inoperative. If your PAN card is deactivated, you will be unable to perform any financial tasks, from bank transactions to filing income tax returns.

According to the Income Tax Department’s strict rules, linking PAN and Aadhaar is now mandatory. Those who failed to complete this process by December 31, 2025, will be forced to throw their PAN cards into the dustbin, meaning they will be deactivated. An inactive PAN means that it will remain a piece of paper but will have no legal value. Since the government has not yet announced any relief, it is every citizen’s responsibility to check whether their PAN card is still showing as ‘Active’.

Disadvantages of a PAN Card Deactivation

If your PAN card becomes inoperative, you may face several significant problems. The biggest setback is that you will not be able to file your Income Tax Return (ITR) or receive your pending tax refund. Regarding banking services, opening a new bank account or a demat account will no longer be possible.

Additionally, cash deposits exceeding β‚Ή50,000 will be subject to a strict freeze, and if you have an inactive PAN, you will be subject to a higher TDS rate. You will also face significant hurdles in obtaining a passport or receiving government subsidies. If you lose your old PAN card, obtaining a new one will be extremely difficult, as providing your Aadhaar number will be mandatory.

How to check if your PAN card is Active

Checking the status of your PAN card is very easy. You don’t need to visit an office; simply follow the steps below:

  • A powerful OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter it on the screen and click ‘Validate’.
