WhatsApp: Following the example of Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, WhatsApp is now preparing to introduce a premium subscription plan. It’s reported that Meta is working on a paid model that will eliminate advertisements for users. Following the introduction of advertisements in WhatsApp’s statuses and channels last year, the company is now planning to introduce an “Ad-Free Experience” as a premium service.
Ad Trap on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has always been known for its clean and ad-free service, but last year, Meta made a major change, breaking this tradition. The advertisements appearing between statuses and channels had a significant impact on the user experience, leading to worldwide protests. But now, the company is turning this opposition into a source of revenue.
Meta is working on a subscription plan whose primary objective will be to remove advertisements. Simply put, if you don’t want commercial ads interrupting your friends’ statuses or scrolling through news channels, you’ll have to pay a few rupees a month. It’s similar to how you get rid of ads and enjoy a smoother interface by subscribing to YouTube Premium.
New version of WhatsApp
Recently, some new strings were discovered in the app code of WhatsApp’s latest beta version 2.26.3.9. According to technical experts, these codes directly point to the development of a new subscription module. While the company has not yet officially revealed the price or specific features of this plan, leaks suggest it is unlikely to include any additional premium features.
Its sole focus will be on providing a distraction-free chat service, meaning it’s ad-free. This move is part of Meta’s global vision to generate revenue from free apps to further improve its services in the future.
Will this rule apply globally
Meta has already launched ad-free subscriptions for Facebook and Instagram in parts of Europe, but that move was made under pressure from the European Union’s strict data privacy regulations. Now the question is whether WhatsApp’s paid plan will also be available in major markets like India? WhatsApp has millions of users in India, and showing ads there is a significant profit generator for the company.
If the company introduces a paid plan here, it could face strong opposition from customers. However, given Meta’s recent activities, it is clear that the company now wants to drive its users to a ‘pay or view’ model—either pay to remove ads or view ads for free. The company has remained silent on availability for now.
Ads Launch and Growing User Opposition
It’s worth noting that Meta began showing ads in WhatsApp statuses and channels only last year. This decision was met with widespread opposition globally, as WhatsApp users have always been accustomed to an ad-free experience.
People believed that privacy and simplicity were the hallmarks of this app, and that ads should be completely absent. Despite this, Meta didn’t back down and is now planning to charge for an ad-free experience. New clues found in the app’s code confirm that the company is now fully prepared to launch it as a product.
