LPG Gas Supply Update: In light of the ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, there is some good news for India. An Indian-flagged LPG vessel named “Green Asha” has successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz and reached the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai.
The vessel was securely moored today at the liquid berth managed by BPCL-IOCL. Notably, this marks the first LPG vessel to dock at JNPA since the onset of the war, representing a significant milestone. The ship “Green Hope” arrived in India with around 15,400 tons of LPG. The vessel, its full cargo, and all crew members are reported to be completely safe.
Amid the current geopolitical tensions, this successful transit serves as a positive indicator for India’s energy supply. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital passage for global oil and gas supplies, where any disruption could affect international markets. This accomplishment is anticipated to bolster India’s energy security and alleviate potential strain on the supply chain.
The two-week ceasefire announced between the US and Iran on April 7-8 has brought the world its first respite since February 28, when US-Israeli forces launched Operation Epic Fury. Iran has agreed to coordinate its military and provide safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the same strait whose closure triggered India’s worst cooking gas crisis in decades.
The question most people in India’s slums, chawls, and rented quarters are asking is: When will my cylinder be returned? The simple answer is: It won’t be back right away.
The reopening of the Strait is conditional and controlled, not unconditional. Iran’s 10-point ceasefire framework includes a “controlled transit protocol,” which will be coordinated by Iran’s armed forces. This means that Tehran will have complete control over who passes through it and when. This is not at all like a free and open waterway.
Where is LPG landing in India right now?
Even before the ceasefire, India was proceeding cautiously. Eight Indian-flagged LPG carriers have now transited the strait; to alleviate supply shortages, priority is being given to ships stranded in the Gulf that are loading LPG. According to a Business Standard report, an LPG ship named ‘Sea Bird’, carrying approximately 44,000 metric tons of Iranian LPG, arrived in Mangaluru on April 2 and is currently unloading the LPG. The Petroleum Ministry has confirmed that Indian refiners have resumed purchasing crude oil and LPG from Iran under a 30-day waiver granted by the US.
