Driving License Update: If your driving license is lost, stolen, or damaged, there’s no need to panic. The process of obtaining a duplicate driving license in India has been made quite simple. You can easily apply for it both online and offline.
Why is a Duplicate Driving License Necessary?
Driving a vehicle without a valid driving license is a legal offense in India. If you are found without a license during a check, you may face a fine or even imprisonment. Therefore, if your license is lost, stolen, or damaged, it becomes necessary to obtain a duplicate license.

A duplicate driving license is issued only in cases where the license is damaged, lost, or stolen. Its validity is the same as the original license. If the license has expired, it is necessary to renew it first. In case of theft or loss, an FIR (First Information Report) is required. According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory to possess a valid driving license.
Documents Required for a Duplicate Driving License
When applying for a duplicate license, some essential documents are required. These include the application form LLD, proof of identity such as an Aadhaar card or a PAN card, proof of address, and a passport-size photograph. If the license was stolen, a copy of the FIR will be required. If the license is damaged, the original document must also be submitted.
How to Get a Duplicate License Offline
For an offline application, you will have to visit the RTO (Regional Transport Office) from where your original license was issued. If you live in a different city, you can also apply at the nearest RTO.
Obtain Form LLD from the RTO or download it from the Parivahan Sewa portal. Fill in the form correctly with your license number and personal information. Then attach all the necessary documents to the form and self-attest them.

The fee for a duplicate license may vary from state to state, approximately between Rs. 200 and Rs. 500. This payment can be made at the RTO or online. The documents will be verified by the RTO, and if everything is found to be in order, a duplicate driving license will be issued, which will be sent to your address or can be collected from the RTO.
