Digital Land Records India: The government has achieved a major milestone in digitizing land records across the country. The process of making land documents online, from rural areas to cities, is almost complete. This change aims to reduce land-related disputes, increase transparency, and simplify processes for the public.
Major Changes in the Land System in Rural Areas

According to a report by the Ministry of Rural Development, land rights records in more than 97 percent of villages are now stored on computers. Approximately 97 percent of land maps are also available in digital form. Land records in approximately 85 percent of villages have been linked to their maps. This has made information about land status, boundaries, and ownership rights clearer and reliable than ever before.
Land Buying and Selling Process Simplified

The government has implemented the National Document Registration System to simplify land registration. This system has been implemented in 17 states, including Punjab, Maharashtra, and Himachal Pradesh. Nearly 88 percent of the country’s sub-registrar offices are now directly connected to the revenue department’s records. The advantage is that records are automatically updated as soon as land is registered, eliminating the need to visit multiple offices.

Direct Benefits for Loan Seekers
Due to digital records, loan processing has also become faster. Banks in 406 districts across the country can check online whether any land is subject to any prior loans or legal restrictions. This makes it easier for banks to make decisions and helps individuals access loans more quickly.

Digitization Work Nearly Complete
According to the Land Resources Department, the work of digitizing land records is now in its final stages. Most services are now available online. Now, people will no longer need to stand in long lines or handle piles of paperwork for land-related work.

Map Scheme Changes the Picture in Cities
The Map Scheme has been launched to improve land and geospatial information in urban areas. Work is underway under this scheme in 157 urban bodies across the country. Aerial surveys have been completed in 116 of these cities, and high-resolution imagery covering 5,915 square kilometers has been acquired. This will provide accurate information about urban land.

Ground-Level Investigations

The government stated that ground-level land surveys have begun in 72 cities and have been completed in 21. This will allow for the timely correction of any discrepancies in maps and records.
ULPIN Becomes Land Identification Number

The government has assigned a unique 14-digit identification number to each piece of land, called ULPIN. This is also considered the Aadhaar card for land. By November 2025, this number will have been assigned to over 360 million pieces of land across 29 states and union territories. This makes land identification, tracking, and record management easier than ever.
