In this financial year, a total of over 21 lakh taxpayers have amended their returns, resulting in the payment of approximately Rs 2,500 crore in taxes. The department recently launched a campaign called ‘Nazar’ (Vigilance), under which taxpayers who claimed incorrect deductions related to unrecognised political parties or certain charitable institutions are being notified via email and SMS.

Appeal to Taxpayers

The Income Tax Department has appealed to all taxpayers to review their returns and verify the accuracy of their deduction and exemption claims. If necessary, they should file a revised return by December 31, 2025. The department clarified that if a taxpayer is claiming legitimate deductions or exemptions, they do not need to take any further action.

When to File an Updated ITR

The last date for taxpayers to file revised returns for the assessment year 2025-26 is December 31, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) stated that during data analysis, it was found that many taxpayers claimed illegal deductions and refunds by making donations to unrecognised political parties and certain charitable institutions. Many of these political parties are not registered, do not file returns, and are not even active.

Use of Unrecognised Entities

The CBDT said that these entities were often being used for money laundering, hawala transactions, sending money abroad, and issuing fake receipts. The board conducted search operations on several unrecognised political parties and charitable trusts and gathered evidence of fake donations and fraudulent CSR activities by companies. Following all of this, the ‘Nazar’ campaign was launched on December 12, in which taxpayers were informed via email and SMS to review their returns and deduction claims and file a revised ITR if necessary. The objective is to increase tax compliance and identify taxpayers making fraudulent claims.
