If you have not filed an income tax return for the financial year 2024-25 till now, then you have limited time left. The government has extended the last date for filing ITR from 31 July 2025 to 15 September 2025. Registration on the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department is mandatory to file returns. Without registration, you can neither file an ITR nor claim a tax refund. Waiting for the last date increases the chances of mistakes, so it is better to file returns on time.
Why is registration necessary?

The e-filing portal is a digital platform for taxpayers, which provides almost every tax-related facility online. Here, neither a return can be filed nor a tax refund can be claimed without registration. This process is completely free, and once completed, the user can manage their tax profile.
What documents will be required?
Some basic documents and details are required to register on the e-filing portal. These include a valid PAN card, active mobile number, and email ID. Keep in mind that it is necessary to register separately for each PAN card.
Step-by-step process of registration

First of all, go to the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department and select the Register button on the homepage. After this, select the taxpayer option and enter the PAN number and validate it. On the next screen, you will have to fill in the information about name, date of birth, gender, and residency status. Then you have to enter the mobile number, email, and address to which different OTPs are sent. After entering these correctly, the user has to set a password and enter a security message. Finally, the process is completed by pressing the register button, and after this, ITR filing can be done by logging in.
