Getting a Passport is Now Easier, Government Launches New System, Know the Details

Passport New Update: The Indian government has launched e-Passports to make the passport system more secure and modern. This system has been designed in such a way that you can now get your passport made from the comfort of your home. If you have applied for a new passport or renewed your old one, you will now be issued an e-Passport. Outwardly, this passport looks similar to the old one, but it has a special electronic chip embedded under the Ashoka Pillar on the cover. This chip makes the passport more secure.
What is an e-Passport?
An e-Passport is essentially an advanced and digital version of a traditional passport. The electronic chip embedded in it securely stores essential information related to the passport holder. This chip stores the person’s photograph, biometric data, fingerprints, and other personal details.

This technology makes it extremely difficult to tamper with or create fake passports. Additionally, e-Passports make immigration clearance much faster than before.
How to apply for an e-Passport?
The application process for an e-Passport is entirely online and uses the Passport Seva Portal. First, you need to register yourself on the website. After registration, log in and select the option for Fresh Passport or Re-issue of Passport.
Those applying for a passport for the first time should select Fresh Passport, and those renewing their passport should select Re-issue. After this, all the information requested in the application form must be filled in carefully. It is important to thoroughly check the form before submitting it.
After submitting the form, the online fee has to be paid through the Pay and Schedule Appointment option. Upon successful payment, an appointment is scheduled at a PSK (Passport Seva Kendra) or Post Office. A receipt is then issued, containing the ARN number and complete appointment details. This information is also sent to your mobile phone via SMS.

How long does it take to get an e-Passport?
On the day of the appointment, you have to visit the Passport Seva Kendra or the Regional Passport Office with all the original documents, where physical verification will be conducted. In some areas, there is also a passport van service that verifies documents at your home.
Following this, the police verification process is completed after physical verification. After all the steps are completed, the e-Passport is usually delivered to the applicant’s address within 15 to 20 days.
