Issues Urgent Pension Order

The Finance Ministry has given an important order for all government employees. All employees must choose a pension scheme before September 30. Only then they will get a guaranteed pension.

The Ministry started this guaranteed pension scheme on April 1, 2025. The deadline has been extended two times. The Ministry asked all employees to pick their pension by September 30. In a notice on Thursday, the Ministry reminded employees to choose the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) before September 30. This will make sure their request is processed on time. The UPS is part of the National Pension System (NPS) for central government employees from April 1, 2025. With UPS, employees will get a guaranteed pension.

Last Date to Choose UPS

Retired and pre-retired employees can also benefit. All eligible employees must choose the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) under NPS by September 30, 2025. The Ministry asks employees to choose early to avoid problems and to process requests on time. Employees who stay in NPS cannot choose UPS after this date.

How Many Have Chosen UPS

By July 20, about 31,555 central government employees had chosen UPS. The last date to join is September 30. On August 25, the Finance Ministry allowed employees to switch from UPS back to NPS. This can be done only once. Employees who switch cannot go back to UPS.

Switch Before Retirement

Employees who chose UPS can switch to NPS one year before retirement. For voluntary retirement, they can switch three months before retirement. UPS also gives benefits like retirement gratuity and death gratuity.
