Big Relief for Labourers: UP Govt Pays Full Hospital Bills for Critical Illness

UP Serious Illness Assistance Update 2026: A deadly disease like cancer not only causes physical suffering but also shakes the financial foundation of the entire family. On the occasion of the recently celebrated World Cancer Day, the Uttar Pradesh government has raised a special hope for construction workers.

Through the “Serious Illness Assistance Scheme,” the state’s Labor Department is assisting registered construction workers who do not have an Ayushman Card or Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card. This scheme is a boon for poor families who were not included in the Ayushman Scheme eligibility list but are facing serious health problems.

Treatment without Expense Limit

This scheme, run by the Uttar Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, is in many ways even more beneficial than Ayushman Bharat because it does not set a maximum limit on treatment expenses.

While Ayushman Bharat limits treatment to ₹5 lakh annually, under this scheme, the Board itself bears the entire actual cost of treatment for serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and kidney disease. This scheme not only covers the diseases listed in Ayushman Bharat, but also 13 other critical illnesses that are excluded from general insurance schemes.

Eligibility Criteria and Beneficiary Members

To avail of this scheme, the applicant must be a registered construction worker with the Uttar Pradesh Labor Department. According to the Board’s rules, under this scheme, the entire cost of treatment for the worker, their spouse, and dependent children under the age of 21 is provided free of cost at government or government-approved private hospitals.

An important condition is that this scheme is only for workers who do not have an Ayushman card, so that healthcare benefits can be accessed by those who have previously been deprived of any government protection.

Application Process and Required Documents

The process of receiving medical assistance has been simplified and digitalized, requiring the worker to first register on the official portal. After clicking on the “Worker Registration” option and entering their personal information, beneficiaries can apply through the scheme section, where verification is done through their Aadhaar number and linked mobile number.

In addition to applying online, workers can also physically fill out the form by visiting their nearest Labor Department office. The application must be accompanied by a labor card, Aadhaar card, bank passbook, and a doctor-certified medical document so the department can process the payment to the hospital without delay.
