Bus Fare Hike Update: Government May Increase Fares, Know When

Bus Fare Hike: Big blow for bus passengers. Travelers in West Bengal could soon experience a challenging situation. Bus owner groups throughout the state are pushing for higher ticket prices. State Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh has backed this request. This announcement comes just one day after the Transport Department signaled plans to raise fares following Durga Puja celebrations. Dilip Ghosh explained that fare increases are vital for boosting revenue and enhancing passenger services.

He mentioned that without raising people’s earnings and expenses, we can’t keep them in difficult situations and pretend we’re helping them. People’s earnings need to grow too so they can enjoy better services.

Passengers are prepared to pay more

Dilip Ghosh noted that travelers are ready to pay higher fares in exchange for improved services. Passengers can travel by paying fares. Seats in air-conditioned buses are reserved ahead of time, and air-conditioned trains are also reserved ahead of time. Since people are happy to spend extra for quality services, they should receive those services, and fares should go up to cover these improvements. Without raising fares, how can we generate the necessary income?

The minister’s comments emerged one day after the Transport Department started working on raising prices for private buses and mini buses following Durga Puja.

State Transport Minister Arjun Singh confirmed support for private bus owners’ requests after listening to their concerns at a gathering on Monday. The gathering also covered their ongoing money troubles, such as toll charges, reported police mistreatment, vehicle confiscation, and various requests about older commercial vehicles. Bus owners say that fare increases are important to keep passenger services financially healthy while dealing with growing costs.

The previous increase in bus and minibus fares in West Bengal happened in 2018. Since that time, fares have stayed the same even though fuel costs and other expenses have gone up. As a result, bus owners have requested a fare increase to guarantee ongoing services without extra financial strain. They said the Transport Minister assured them that action would be taken after the festival.
